  Will Japan BREW Jolt Java?
Thursday, March 13, 2003
Summary Will Japan BREW Jolt Java? After a two-year business strategy planning pause, BREW finally launched in Japan last month. From the consumer point of view, BREW and Java work more or less the same: you navigate a menu, select an application, download it, then run it. There’s little to chose on a technology basis. But BREW - like 3G - may be able to gain a leg up on Java (DoCoMo’s favored choice) if KDDI can continue to roll out cool, fun, cheap, feature-laden (and BREW-enabled) handsets - much as the carrier has done with 3G.   Feeding Content to Keitais
Tuesday, October 08, 2002
Summary Japanese carriers have created killer Java services... and they had to do so from scratch. That included the provisioning system which actually feeds the applis onto the handsets (providers merely have to write the downloadable Java code). Now another major player has launched a Java provisioning system (which also works for other content). Want to launch Java, but you’re not partnered with DoCoMo? You’d better watch this one twice...   Wireless Java Wins IPO Riches
Tuesday, September 24, 2002
Summary WWJ visits then-pre-IPO software developer Net Village, creator of the "Remote Mail" Java-based mail appli. A couple of key facts emerged: Java boosts packet revenue for the carriers, the cost and complexity of deploying sophisticated Java applis may be beyond what the carriers themselves can do (economically), and Remote Mail is one cool app -- 330,000 happy users can’t all be wrong! (See a live demo.) Oh -- and NV’s IPO generated a modest 4.094 billion yen. (Wireless Watch Japan)

Nikkei BP survey shows popularity of i-Appli phones
Tuesday, September 18, 2001

The survey also showed that a higher ratio of the users questioned spend more on their data communication costs and service use fees after purchasing i-Appli compatible handsets, attesting to the success of the i-Appli launch. At the time of the survey, five cell phone manufacturers were producing terminals for the 503 series.   NTT DoCoMo to Add Capacity to 'i-appli' Handsets
Wednesday, September 12, 2001
Summary NTT DoCoMo Inc. said it plans to increase the size of Java applications that can be handled by its i-appli handsets. New i-Appli phones that go on sale next spring will be able to run Java programs that are up to 30KB in size -- triple the current limit of 10KB per application. At present, users of i-Appli phones -- or 503i-series handsets -- can download and run Java applications comprised of a maximum of 10KB of compressed data. However, Java content providers have pointed out that the 10KB size limit means that the variety and type of applications that they can offer to users is restricted. The i-Appli service already lags its two main competitors -- J-Phone's comparable Java service allows for 30KB, while KDDI's can handle 50KB Java applications, a full five times the current i-Appli maximum. NTT DoCoMo also says that the speed of i-mode data communications is to be boosted, with the maximum speed of data transfer being tripled to 28.8kbps (when data is being downloaded to the handset).   Java i-appli Boosts Users' Spending on Data Communication
Tuesday, September 11, 2001
Summary Users of Java-based "i-appli" service on NTT DoCoMo's mobile phones spend an average of 17.1 minutes per day utilizing the service, including time for downloading and starting-up the system, according to a survey conducted by Nikkei Business Publications Inc. In terms of frequency, the average use of i-appli service by users of "503i" models -- i-appli compliant mobile phones -- is less than once a day on both weekdays and weekends. This is about the same as the frequency of reading online newsletters and browsing Web sites. The use of mobile phones is still focused on e-mail communication, For example, they exchange personal e-mails about five times a day and make only a couple of telephone calls a day on average. Regarding the operating costs for users of the 503i series, 63.4 percent and 36.6 percent of the users saw an increase in their spending for data communication and for content service charges (information fees), respectively, in comparison with their bills before they bought a 503i phone.
