Japans KDDI unveils phones with digital TV, chat
Tuesday, October 25, 2005 |
|
Summary
KDDI Corp., Japans second-largest mobile operator, on Monday unveiled a lineup of new phones with the ability to watch short segments of digital television programs and communicate with a group via text or voice. KDDI said the autumn/winter line of phones for its main mobile phone service, au (pronounced AY-U), was meant to capture customers by diversifying its offerings at a reasonable service price. KDDIs mobile phone business has enjoyed strong demand in recent years thanks to aggressive pricing plans, attractive phones and innovative services. Au has been steadily gaining customers in Japans fiercely competitive mobile phone market, and finished September with a total base of 20.7 million, compared with its larger rival NTT DoCoMo Inc.s 49.9 million customers. Au, which absorbed KDDIs smaller Tu-ka unit earlier this year, aims to increase its combined market share to more than 30 percent in the mid-term from about 27 percent currently. (Reuters) |

KDDI adds most mobile users in Aug, DoCoMo leads 3G
Wednesday, September 7, 2005 |
|
Summary
KDDI Corp.’s main mobile phone unit gained more new users on a net basis for the second-straight month in August than NTT DoCoMo Inc. , Japan’s largest mobile operator, an industry group said on Wednesday. DoCoMo, however, maintained a lead in adding new third-generation (3G) users. Vodafone K.K., the No.3 operator owned by Britain’s Vodafone Group Plc , showed a small customer increase for the third-straight month after a period of losses, according to the Telecommunications Carriers Association, which compiles data reported by the operators. KDDI Corp.’s au (pronounced AY-U) mobile unit added 185,300 new customers in August and users of its high-speed 3G service totalled 19.3 million, or 94 percent of its customer base. DoCoMo followed with a total 119,900 net new customers. It added almost a million 3G users in August, many of whom had switched from its older mobile services. It ended the month with 31.9 percent of its customers on 3G. Vodafone gained 3,600 new customers and finished the month with about 15 million customers. Net customer growth is calculated by subtracting customers who left a service from the absolute number of new subscribers.
The industry had a total of 88.8 million subscribers in August, of which 41.4 percent were subscribed to 3G services. (Reuters) |

KDDI Reports Profit on Cell Phone Growth
Friday, July 29, 2005 |
|
Summary
Japanese telecommunications company KDDI Corp. said Monday profit for the quarter ended June 30 rose nearly 2 percent as its booming cell phone business offset damage from struggling fixed-line operations. April-June profit at Japan’s second largest telecom, totaled 52.6 billion yen ($473 million), up from 51.7 billion yen the same period a year ago. The company had 714.3 billion yen ($6.4 billion) in sales, down nearly 1 percent from 720.1 billion yen. But the sales loss came mostly from the negative impact from a sale of its subsidiary last October, the company said. If the sale of DDI Pocket Inc., a mobile phone service that uses an older technology, to Carlyle Group L.P. and Kyocera Corp. were excluded, Tokyo-based KDDI had higher revenue and operating profit compared to a year ago. KDDI said its "au" mobile phone service continued to grow steadily, and subscribers topped 20 million for the first time ever in June. KDDI has also been more successful than NTT DoCoMo in attracting customers to its third-generation services, which relays data faster than the mobile phones now prevalent in most parts of the world. More than 90 percent of KDDI customers now use its third-generation, or 3G, services. (AP) |

Japans KDDI to start selling 3G phones with GPS, TV tuner functions
Tuesday, May 24, 2005 |
|
Summary
KDDI Corp will start selling next month three third-generation (3G) cellular phones that provide location information, and two handsets that will allow users to view TV programs, the Nihon Keizai Shimbum reported, citing the company.
Three models will use Global Positioning System (GPS) technology to give the location of the handset user on a map displayed on the cellphone screen, the business daily said. The two TV-tuner-equipped models will let users view conventional analog TV broadcasts and record songs, the report said. The Nikkei said users of Win handsets will pay on average about 10,000 yen a month in communications charges, around 3,000 yen more than the average monthly bill among users of KDDI's 'au' cellphone service. It said KDDI plans to release more such handset models, with the aim of doubling the number of Win users to 7.66 mln by next March. Around 92 pct of au customers are already using 3G handsets, compared to just 25 pct at NTT DoCoMo Inc, Japan's leading cellphone service company, the report said.

KDDI to Start Music Download Service for Mobile Phones
Monday, October 18, 2004 |
|
Summary
KDDI will start EZ "Chaku-Uta Full", a service which enables artists songs to be downloaded in their entirety to a mobile phone beginning in late November. The company expects to charge a few hundred yens per song and to have about 10,000 songs on offer by the time the service is launched. The downloaded audio data can be stored in either embedded memory or on a miniSD card. To prevent the audio data stored on miniSD cards from being copied to other memory media, the company ties them up with mobile phone numbers. The current capacity of memory cards may become too short for audio data, therefore mobile phones will naturally progress toward featuring micro hard disk drive devices.

KDDI to develop mobile phones run by miniaturized fuel cell: paper
Monday, July 12, 2004 |
|
Summary
KDDI plans to develop mobile phones powered by miniaturized fuel cells for commercialization as early as 2007 in cooperation separately with Hitachiand Toshiba. If new fuel cells are created, mobile phones can be operated two times longer than those run by conventional lithium-ion batteries. Recently, cellphones require more power as they are increasingly becoming multifunctional. Handsets run by lithium-ion batteries last about two hours if users continuously watch TV on their units. The companies plan to develop a highly compact direct methanol fuel cell, in which power will be generated by extracting hydrogen ions from methanol. KDDI will try to develop prototype cell phones powered by such a fuel cell by March 2006. (Yahoo! Asia) |

The first of these handsets will be able to store five five-minute songs apiece, and 50-song models are under development. Once stored, the songs can be played repeatedly. KDDI is now negotiating fees for the songs with music labels. Currently, 30-second songs that serve as ringer melodies now cost about 105 yen. The average of 210 yen charged for downloading a full song to a personal computer will probably be used a reference for setting the price for cell phone downloads. (NE Asia Online) |

Approximately 87% of them subscribe to the flat-rate packet communication plan called "EZ Flat." Apparnet proof that the packet flat-rate system is changing users’ behavior can be found in looking at the access rates. In the past, when users found a Web site that they liked, they would register it in their "My favorities" category and by taking as direct route as possible they tried to avoid increasing packet fees. However, the frequency with which 1X WIN users access the top menu of ’EZ web was 0.13 times a day. Now, with 1X WIN users, the frequency jumped to 1.09 times a day as of January 2004. Thanks to the fixed fee system, users can now afford to go explore more sites on the Internet.
This inccreased usage has led to increased usage of fee-charging content. For 1X users, Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) is 610 yen, whereas EZ Flat subscribers spend 1,470 yen, more than double that of 1X users.

3G business boosts KDDI
Thursday, April 29, 2004 |
|
Summary
KDDI, Japan’s second-largest telecommunications operator, doubled operating profits and net profits as its "au" mobile phone business enjoyed a surge in subscribers who were attracted to its third generation service. KDDI, which has signed up more than 13.4m 3G subscribers, was able to benefit as well from reduced costs in its PDC system, the mobile phone technology that is unique to Japan. The telecoms group uses the CDMA2000 standard for 3G, which has been adopted mainly in Korea and the US, among leading markets. This has helped KDDI to attract large numbers of subscribers since the technology is backwards compatible.

KDDI’s Weapon Against DoCoMo
Wednesday, April 28, 2004 |

Summary
Japanese cellular operator KDDI has long operated in the shadow of its bigger, more glamorous rival, NTT DoCoMo. While DoCoMo garnered praise for winning customers to its groundbreaking i-mode service and for launching one of the first third-generation (3G) networks, KDDI struggled. In the second part of Online Asia’s look at the Japanese cellular market, I recently talked to Hideao Okinaka, the vice-president and general manager of KDDI’s au business sector. I asked him about what it’s like to be David to DoCoMo’s Goliath. (BusinessWeek) |

Wednesday, April 21, 2004 |
|
Summary
Narus, Inc., a leading mediation system provider, today announced it is expanding its focus into the mobile market through new business with long-time customer and leading Japanese 3G operator KDDI. As KDDI has evolved and grown into their revolutionary EvDO mobile network, Narus has been chosen to provide the mediation system for that growth. KDDI has been using Narus since it first deployed its CDMA2000 network in 2001. This network has grown to more than 10 million subscribers and Narus has been a part of that growth. With the launch of their EvDO network, KDDI has become the largest 3G operator in Japan. The Narus system is used by KDDI for the billing of KDDI’s data services; a service which is leading KDDI’s profit and subscriber growth as reported in their August 2003 company update report. The Narus system deployed by KDDI includes Narus’ high-availability option, providing greater than 99.999% system reliability/uptime. This Narus system has exceeded these levels with 100% uptime, not losing any data or associated revenue in well over a year in production.

KDDI says to keep small mobile unit TU-KA for now
Wednesday, June 25, 2003 |
|
Summary
Japan’s second-largest telecoms operator, KDDI Corp, said on Tuesday it would keep its loss-making TU-KA mobile phone unit, but left open the possibility of an operational or ownership change in the future. Responding to a suggestion at its shareholders’ meeting that KDDI integrate TU-KA’s 3.75 million users into the network of its main brand, "au", KDDI President Tadashi Onodera said the cost of integration would be too high at this time. KDDI juggles three mobile phone networks -- au, TU-KA and DDI Pocket -- raising concerns among investors about its operational efficiency. TU-KA, which has been losing subscribers for the last two years, was put on the selling block in 2001, but was withdrawn after KDDI decided the offers were too low.

MPEG-4 Licensing Mess Hits Japanese Mobile
Thursday, May 8, 2003 |
|
Summary
In a confusing move, US-based MPEG LA, LLC, which manages the collective MPEG related patents for the MPEG-4 visual compression standard, delivered a 47-page agreement (in English) to befuddled Japanese content providers laying out new terms for paying royalties on video download content formatted in MEG-4. The document was allegedly broadcast-faxed by mobile operator KDDI -- which has settled on MPEG-4 for delivering mobile video downloads -- and which also happens to be an MPEG-4 patent holder, along with numerous other Japanese and foreign companies. Japanese content providers were shocked to read MPEG LA could ask them to pay from 25 cents per user up to US$1,000,000 per year, depending on the volume and manner in which users download content. Japanese content providers have been given 30 days to sign the agreement in order to take advantage of an "early bird" special that waives royalties until the end of 2003. Some say Japan's budding video-download market won't bear the high royalities, which will either erode profits or drive up content costs. The development risks driving content companies away from download services that use MPEG-4, or toward other compression formats such as Office Noa's "Nancy" video codec (used by J-Phone) or other alternatives. KDDI sees 3G users doubling in 03/04
Thursday, April 24, 2003 |
|
Summary
Japan’s KDDI Corp said on Wednesday it expects users of its third-generation (3G) mobile phone service to double by the end of this business year, but saw no quick end to a recent slide in revenues per customer. KDDI unit "au", the biggest of KDDI’s three mobile phone arms, expects its average revenue per user (ARPU), a widely used measure of profitability, to come to 7,490 yen ($62.47) per month for the year that ended in March, down from 8,080 yen a year earlier. "We are expecting a further slide in ARPU this business year. It would be a gentle slide, though," KDDI Senior Vice President Nobuhiko Nakano told Reuters in an interview.

Friday, April 18, 2003 |
|
Summary
KDDI, Japans second largest wireless operator, and Motorola jointly celebrated a significant industry milestone on April 8, 2003, when the seven millionth mobile subscriber was registered on KDDIs CDMA2000 1X voice and data network. KDDI launched its CDMA2000 1X voice and data service on April 1, 2002 on its all Motorola supplied wireless radio access network. CDMA2000 1X subscriptions rose quickly after launch last year, hitting one million users on June 23, two million on August 23, and rapidly accelerating thereafter. Services are already offered in all 47 of Japans prefectures and administrative divisions, and are accessible to 90 percent of the countrys population. CDMA2000 1X technology nearly doubles the network voice capacity and is capable of transmitting data with a maximum downstream speed of 144kbps and a maximum upstream speed of 64kbps.

KDDI to restrict access to cell phone dating web sites
Wednesday, April 16, 2003 |
|
Summary
Telecom carrier KDDI Corp and its unit Okinawa Cellular Telephone Co said they plan to introduce in the fall a function in their "au" brand cell phone services which can be used to block access to dating service web sites. The two companies said the measure is to respond to a social problem involving juveniles using the online dating sites. Under the plan, subscribers to the au services can choose between unrestricted Internet access on their handsets and filtered access to only 21 sites for which the two companies can be liable, they said. The selection can be made free of charge. KDDI said TU-KA group cellular phone firms, which are part of the KDDI group, will introduce a similar function, at the earliest next year.

Cell-phone carrier hopes going back to basics will attract older, largely untapped segment of population. As surprising as it may seem, not all mobile phone companies are rushing to add a Swiss-army-knife’s worth of features to their handsets. By doing so, the company hopes to appeal to what it sees as an untapped market of middle-aged and older people who either have no use for fancy new gadgets, are intimidated by them, or simply don’t want them. KDDI to be Licensed for 1xEV-DO/CDMA2000 1x Dual-Mode Mobile Phones in Early August
Saturday, February 8, 2003 |
|
Summary
KDDI Corp said it is about to receive a comprehensive license for dual-mode mobile phones supporting both "CDMA2000 1x" for third-generation mobile phones (3G) and "CDMA2000 1xEV-DO," which offers higher speed data transmission based on the 1x service, in early August. Users of wireless handsets need to get a license for wireless devices they would be using from the Ministry of Public Management, Home Affairs, Posts and Telecommunications. Practically, mobile phone operators apply for licenses on behalf of their users of such devices.
KDDI plans to start the CDMA2000 1xEV-DO service this fall. Theoretically, the service is to enable a downstream data rate at the fastest speed of 2.4Mbps. KDDI expects to provide an actual data rate of around 600-800kbps in this service. (NEAsia Online) |

KDDI enjoys strong Q1, but 3G competition heating up
Saturday, February 8, 2003 |
|
Summary
KDDI Corp, Japan’s No. 2 telecoms operator, reported a stellar set of quarterly results on Thursday thanks to its popular 3G mobile service, but it warned that competition may heat up later in the year. KDDI’s group net profit totalled 43.93 billion yen ($365 million) in the April-June period. As of the end of June, "au" had 8.57 million 3G users, overwhelming the 534,800 subscribers at larger rival NTT DoCoMo, whose 3G operation has until recently suffered from its limited area coverage and the poor battery life of its 3G handsets. But Onodera said Docomo’s 3G service, FOMA, could improve and pose a threat to KDDI’s shares.

KDDI says photo-mail users spending more
Sunday, November 17, 2002 |
|
Summary
KDDI Corp, Japans second-largest telecoms carrier, said on Monday that users of its mobile photo e-mailing service spend about one-third more per month than its other cellphone subscribers, giving a hefty lift to revenues. "Presuming a typical subscriber has an average revenue per user of 7,500 yen ($62.30) per month, (photo-mail users) end up about 2,000 to 3,000 yen above that," Toshio Okihashi, senior executive manager of KDDIs flagship "au" mobile service, said. KDDIs photo-mail service, launched in April, lets subscribers snap photos with camera-equipped handsets and send them to other cellphone users. "In the first month people tend to use the service heavily, but then cut back in the second month after they get their first bill. By the third month, the level of use stabilises," Okihashi told a news conference. (Reuters) |

Market leader NTT DoCoMo signed 239,000 new users last month, to take its total subscriber base to more than 42.16 million, but only around 2,200 of these chose DoCoMos FOMA 3G service. NTT claimed just 135,000 3G subscribers at the end of September. DoCoMos nearest rival, KDDI, had another good month at its own 3G division, adding 510,000 subscribers to take its total 3G customer base to 2.65 million. (BWCS) |

KDDI Expects To Offer High-Speed Data Svc Nationwide 2003
Friday, October 4, 2002 |
|
Summary
KDDI Corp. expects to provide its third-generation high-speed data transmission service "1x EV-DO" nationwide via reasonably priced cellphone handsets sometime next year, a senior KDDI official said. "For 1x EV-DO, naturally we mustn’t violate our principle of being able to use the same handset nationwide," Makoto Takahashi, general manager of KDDI’s Content Business Department. Takahashi said KDDI hopes to offer 100% coverage in Japan for the new service and intends to sell compatible cellphone handsets that have battery lives and retail prices similar to those of its current handsets. KDDI has said it plans to introduce 1x EV-DO next autumn. The service is expected to enable data transmission speeds of up to two megabits a second. (Dow Jones) |

Japan’s Kddi to Test 3G Cell Phone With Credit Card Function
Tuesday, October 1, 2002 |
|
Summary
KDDI Corp. said that in March it will start field-testing a new 3G (third-generation) cellular phone that can be used as a credit card. The test will be conducted jointly with JCB Co., Toyota Finance Corp. and three other credit card companies. In the test, users will install smart credit cards with their bank account information in the handsets. The handset will then send infrared signals to a store special terminal to make payments. When making a purchase, users need only type in a four-digit personal identification number because such credit card data as the 16-digit card number is sent automatically. KDDI plans to test the phones for about six months and aims to market them by the end of next fiscal year. (Asia Pulse / Nikkei) |

KDDI says 2002/03 ARPU lower than original target
Friday, September 20, 2002 |
|
Summary
Japan’s second-largest wireless operator, KDDI Corp, said on Friday its average per-user revenue for the year to next March was likely to fall short of its original target of 7,900 yen ($65.04) per month. KDDI President Tadashi Onodera said, however, that better-than-expected net subscriber growth and a declining churn rate were expected to offset lower average revenue per user (ARPU). "We are winning subscribers at a faster pace than originally expected, and our churn rate is falling. With these factors and lower ARPU cancelling each other out, we expect little direct impact on earnings," Onodera told a regular news conference. (Reuters) |

KDDI aims 25% of Japan new cellphone users
Wednesday, September 18, 2002 |
|
Summary
Japan’s second-largest wireless operator, KDDI Corp, is aiming to sign up a quarter of the nation’s new cellphone users in the second half of the business year to gain on dominant NTT DoCoMo Inc. "We aim to sign up 25 percent of new subscribers each month. Our total market share now stands at a little more than 17 percent. So we’d liked to achieve that goal mainly by chipping away at DoCoMo’s share," Toshio Maki, a general manager of KDDI’s "au" wireless services division, told a seminar. Maki said the planned launch of new camera-equipped phones in late September and a cut in data transmission rates in October would help KDDI lure new subscribers from DoCoMo, which holds a 60 percent market share. KDDI: On Track With WLAN Plan?
Wednesday, August 7, 2002 |
|
Summary
KDDI Corp. has finally admitted that it will launch experimental WLAN services, making it the last of Japan wireless telecom triumvirate to announce such a move, although it still has no official plans to fire up a full-blown service. One of the reasons KDDI is being so cautious with WLAN is that it has yet to figure out exactly where it is going with high-bandwidth technologies and what its target audience should be. For example, the company has hinted at ambitious plans to build intelligent networks to control appliances based on set-top boxes linked to 3G and FTTH networks. DoCoMo, despite the relative failure of its 3G FOMA service, has clear plans to hit the corporate market with WLAN-3G integration. (Unstrung) |

KDDI Signs Memorandum with Regional Chinese Telco Companies
Wednesday, December 5, 2001 |
|
Summary
KDDI has signed a new business exchange memorandum with three regional Chinese telecom companies: Beijing Telecom Corporation, Shanghai Telecom Corporation and Guangdong Telecom Corporation. The agreement covers exchange related to operations, technology, marketing, as well as exchange of management personnel. KDDI's move is spurred by China's acceptance into the WTO and the loosening of restrictions on foreign investment in the three urban centers of Beijing, Shanghai and Guangdong. The three companies have combined annual revenues of over 6 billion US$. (KDDI) Editor's Comment: KDDI continues to make inroads in alliances with overseas operators, especially in mainland China where NTT DoCoMo's presence has been conspicuously missing. |

Compaq, KDDI develop system for remote wireless
Monday, November 26, 2001 |
|
Summary
Also included in the alliance is Japanese data center company CSK Network Systems Corp. and Korean software developer Witnet Co. Witnet offers a PDA application called "Mobilick", which executes PC applications and displays the screen results on a PDA. The interesting benefit of this is that a user can operate a PDA as if operating a PC, so the PDA becomes literally an extension of the office. The alliance will start offering the service on an enterprise level from late January 2002. For around 500 users, it is estimated to cost 30-35 million yen (130.73 yen = US$1), including expenses for PDA devices and communication cards. (M. Thuresson) |

KDDI unveils 2nd half 2001 strategy
Tuesday, November 13, 2001 |
|
Summary
KDDI's second half strategy aims to increase their competitive edges and minimize competition between its business units. KDDI is suffering substantial losses because it offers three services to almost identical markets. KDDI aims to differentiate these services by users, and it will begin to advertise with names like "GPS Keitai" (cell phones) and "Movie Keitai" in December. The mainstay is Au's cdmaOne mobile communications service, and it will provide a wide range of users with mobile-phone services offering diverse data communications functions. The PDC service of the TU-KA Group will concentrate mainly on voice communications service. The PHS business will be migrated to data communications service. This follows the popularity of its new Air H" service. (Nikkei Communications) |

KDDI reports profit and raises outlook
Friday, November 9, 2001 |
|
Summary
KDDI Corp revised its full-year earnings forecast, saying new mobile services would help boost its challenge to rival NTT. But analysts said stiff price competition in the fixed-line business and slowing growth in KDDI's mobile subscriptions would make it difficult for the company to achieve its goals. The firm reported a 6.69 billion yen ($55 million) net profit for the six months to September, in line with its own forecasts, and boosted its full-year forecast to 63 billion yen from September's forecast of 35 billion yen due to a planned extraordinary gain. Analysts have warned that KDDI needs to address its structural problems and should consolidate its three wireless arms, au Corp, Tu-ka and DDI Pocket. (Reuters) |

KDDI bracing for weak Oct, Nov growth
Friday, October 12, 2001 |
|
Summary
KDDI expects subscriber growth for wireless services to remain sluggish in October and November as it prepares to introduce new services. KDDI's number of net new subscribers at wireless unit ``au'' has been weak over the last four months, and the company said it would remain weak as the company prepares to roll out new multimedia services. Number three mobile operator J-Phone Communications beat ``au'' in subscriber growth in each month between June to September on the strength of its popular camera-attached handsets. In September, ``au'' added 99,900 net new users to bring its total to 11.8 million while J-Phone added 174,400 to reach 11.1 million. KDDI's other wireless unit, Tuka, is losing subscribers while dominant wireless operator NTT DoCoMo is surging forward, adding 383,000 new users in September and bringing its total to 38.4 million subscribers. LG Telecom & KDDI agree to push CDMA worldwide
Tuesday, October 9, 2001 |
|
Summary
South Korea's LG Telecom and Japan's KDDI Corp. agreed Tuesday to set up a "worldwide code division multiple access [CDMA] belt" through a wide range of technology exchanges and marketing cooperation. The agreement follows a May memorandum of understanding [MOU] reached between the Korean firm and KDDI on bilateral comprehensive cooperation. LG and KDDI, Japan's second-largest telecommunications operator, use the cdma2000 platform for third-generation [3G] mobile services in their own countries. The format is an alternative to the W-CDMA platform. Under the CDMA belt scheme, the two partners plan to make an alliance with CDMA operators in China, North America, Latin America, Australia, Southeast Asia and India. In particular, LG and KDDI plan to cooperate in launching an advanced car navigation service known as Telematics. At present, LG and KDDI work with Hyundai Motor Co. and Toyota Motors Corp., respectively, in a bid to commercialize the service utilizing 3G services. Other areas in the LG-KDDI agreement include exchanges of contents and cooperation in data services. (Asia Pulse) |

KDDI Reduces Directors' Salaries By 10%
Tuesday, October 9, 2001 |
|
Summary
KDDI Corp. has reduced the salaries of the company's directors by 10% for a three-month period from Oct. 1 to enhance management responsibility for KDDI's earnings. Last month, KDDI cut its earnings projections for this fiscal year, citing falls in cellphone-related revenue, and a faster-than-expected saturation of Japan's mobile phone market, which is likely to lead to a decrease in new subscribers. For this fiscal year, KDDI now expects group pretax profit of Y70 billion and a net profit of Y35 billion on sales of Y2.936 trillion. Previously, KDDI had forecast group pretax profit of Y110 billion and net profit of Y64 billion on sales of Y3.01 trillion. |

KDDI delay, Nextel moves drag down Qualcomm 19%
Monday, October 8, 2001 |
|
Summary
Qualcomm Inc. shares fell 19% this week, bucking a rising U.S. stock market, on concern that decisions by two cellular service providers will cut the mobile-phone chip maker's sales. Analysts said Qualcomm's stock fell on investor concern that the San Diego-based company may lose some sales because Japan's KDDI Corp. delayed plans to upgrade its network with Qualcomm technology and because Nextel Communications Inc. chose to buy Motorola Inc. equipment for its network rather than gear based on Qualcomm's chips and patents. Last Friday, Qualcomm shares fell for the fifth time in six days, declining $3.54 to $38.46, the lowest close since September 1999. Its shares have dropped 53% this year. (Bloomberg) |

KDDI profit reported to fall 38% below forecast
Friday, October 5, 2001 |
|
Summary
Japan's No. 2 telecoms firm, KDDI Corp., is expected to post a full-year operating profit 38 percent short of its forecast due to slower revenues from its mobile-phone division, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun said on Friday. The business daily said operating profit was likely to come in at 92 billion yen ($780 million) for the 2001/02 business year to end-March, down from an earlier estimate of 150 billion yen. Group sales are expected at 2.94 trillion yen, compared with the company's forecast of 3.01 trillion, as the rate of new subscribers for its mobile unit "au" has slowed considerably. The slowdown in the economy has decreased average revenue per user (ARPU), as customers become more selective about mobile phone spending. ARPU has fallen seven to eight percent below initial estimates of 9,200 yen for the "au" service in the six months to September. The company is expecting further losses in the next six months, the paper said. KDDI's other mobile phone service, Tu-ka, is expected to post an operating loss of five billion yen for the full year to end-March, compared with a 8.3 billion yen profit a year earlier. Last week, KDDI delayed the launch of its next-generation wireless service to April 1, 2002. (Reuters) |

KDDI's Mobile Motion Picture Service to Begin Dec. 2001
Wednesday, October 3, 2001 |
|
Summary
Japan's No.2 telecom carrier, said Thursday it will postpone the launch of its next-generation 3G mobile phone service to April from autumn. The service will be initially offered in the Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka areas. The service areas will be expanded later, KDDI said. The 3G service will have a transmission speed of 144Kbps, compared with KDDI's existing CDMA technology, which operates at 64Kbps. KDDI president Tadashi Onodera attributed the delay in offering its 144Kbps speed cdma2000 1X 3G service to the slower than expected development of software to be installed at its communication relay stations. He rejected recent media reports that the delay stemmed from the late development of terminal handsets. Although the 3G service has been delayed, KDDI has decided to offer movie clip distribution services in December by using its current 64Kbps cdmaOne service, which it initially planned to provide through cdma2000 1X. All mobile phones for use in KDDI's service sold from April next year will be available for the higher-speed service. Onodera expects demand for the new terminal handset to stand at about 8.0 million units next fiscal year. (Dow Jones) |

KDDI Property Sale to Raise 178 Billion Yen
Wednesday, October 3, 2001 |
|
Summary
KDDI Corp plans to raise 178 billion yen through the sale of four office buildings in what will be Japan's largest property securitization, the Nihon Keizai newspaper said, without citing sources. Japan's second-largest mobile-phone operator will establish a special-purpose company that will buy the buildings, which include KDDI's head office, with money raised from bond issues and bank loans. These will be repaid with revenue generated by rent payments, some of which will be paid by KDDI, the Nikkei said. The special-purpose company will issue 135 billion yen ($1.16 billion) in bonds, mainly for sale to insurance companies, making this deal Japan's largest property securitization. KDDI will use the proceeds to help pay back half its 2 trillion debt by March 2005, the paper said. Tokyo-based KDDI plans to spend about 980 billion yen in the next four years to develop faster wireless data services, and as Japanese stock markets continue to decline, companies are being forced to look for new ways of raising money. KDDI said to delay high-speed mobile phone service
Tuesday, October 2, 2001 |
|
Summary
Japan's second-largest carrier, KDDI Corp, has decided to postpone to next year the launch of its high-speed mobile Internet access service, Japanese media said on Wednesday. KDDI's wireless unit "au" (aye-you) was planning to introduce its cdma2000 1X service this autumn. The cdma2000 1X technology is seen as interim before KDDI eventually migrates to third generation (3G) services. A KDDI spokesman declined to confirm a Kyodo News Agency report of a delay, although a number of analysts have said they had heard it was possible. The Mainichi daily newspaper also reported the possibility last week. "We are still in the final decision process with regard to next-generation wireless services," the spokesman said. NTT DoCoMo Inc is set to offer from October 1 a commercial 3G service after an initial trial service, to become the world's first 3G operator. Japan Telecom, the number-three telecoms firm, earlier this year also delayed its target date for advanced wireless services. (Reuters) |

Two U.S. firms bid for unit of Japan's KDDI
Monday, October 1, 2001 |
|
Summary
Two U.S. companies have begun bidding for a wireless unit of KDDI Corp amid moves by Japan's second-largest telecommunications firm to streamline operations. The business daily said Carlyle Group, a Washington-based private equity fund, and U.S. investment fund Ripplewood had entered bidding for KDD wireless affiliate DDI pocket, which operates the low-cost Personal Handyphone System (PHS) mobile network. The paper said KDDI had hired Goldman Sachs Group Inc. as an adviser. Saddled with about two trillion yen ($17 billion) of debt, KDDI has been trying to streamline its mobile operations and cut costs. KDDI has already agreed to lease the PHS network to startup firm Japan Communications Inc, which had 2.95 million subscribers in August. The newspaper said the PHS network, which allows the transmission of data at speeds of up to 64 kilobits per second, can handle about 10 million users. KDDI has also been trying to sell wireless affiliate Tu-ka. France Telecom SA's wireless unit Orange SA and Newbridge Capital LLC have shown interest, the Wall Street Journal reported on September 7. On Monday, shares in KDDI were up 1.58 percent at 322,000 yen while the benchmark Nikkei average dropped 5.05 percent to 9,503. (Reuters) |

Interview: Tadashi Onodera of KDDI calls for More Services
Friday, September 28, 2001 |
|
Summary
TADASHI ONODERA is playing catch-up. In March, he became president of Japan's No. 2 telecoms company, KDDI. Immediately, he was thrust into intense competition in the booming mobile-phone market with the country's largest carrier and KDDI's arch-enemy, NTT DoCoMo. To woo more customers, KDDI has rebranded its mobile service as Au, (rhymes with hey-you) and its mobile Internet service ezWeb. It is also upgrading its CDMA (code-division multiple-access) technology for mobile services to the more sophisticated CDMA 2000 1x third-generation, or 3G standard. But apart from technology, marketing and extra services are key. Onodera spoke with the REVIEW's technology editor Charles Bickers in Tokyo. (Far Eastern Economic Review) |

Japan's KDDI Looks To Cut Debt In Mulling Tu-Ka Sale
Tuesday, September 25, 2001 |
|
Summary
Japan's KDDI Corp. has apparently put reducing its Y2 trillion debt over boosting short-term profits by considering a sale of its "Tu-Ka" mobile phone unit to a U.S. private equity firm. Japan's No. 2 telecommunications firm wouldn't confirm a report that it may sell the debt-laden cellphone unit to Texas Pacific Group. A KDDI spokesman said the firm has "gotten several inquiries" but that nothing is decided. But analysts say KDDI is taking a fresh look at its financial position. "KDDI management's stance on a Tu-Ka selloff has changed," said Yasumasa Goda, telecom analyst at Merrill Lynch in Tokyo. "If the sale were agreed upon, that would eliminate Y380 billion in debt carried by Tu-Ka from KDDI's balance sheet, which would be extremely positive for KDDI's financial position," Goda said. Investors cautiously agreed, pushing KDDI shares up Y1,000, or 0.3%, to Y335,000, while the benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average fell 1.6%. (Dow Jones) |

KDDI says no capital tie-up plans with foreign Telcos
Wednesday, September 19, 2001 |
|
Summary
KDDI Corp. will not pursue any capital tie-ups with foreign telecommunication carriers because it thinks it can achieve its goals through other kinds of business agreements, said KDDI President Tadashi Onodera. Onodera said KDDI's balance sheet is too weak to allow for investing in overseas carriers in the hope of achieving a return. He also said KDDI thinks it can succeed without seeking investment in itself from foreign carriers. However, the KDDI president expressed an eagerness to pursue alliances that don't involve a capital exchange. He said KDDI recently signed a memorandum of understanding with China Unicom Ltd. (CHU) to study mobile-phone roaming in China so KDDI's Japanese customers can use their phones there. KDDI also signed an agreement in July with Williams Communications Group Inc. (WCG) of the U.S., in which each carrier gives the other preferred rights to use its optical fiber network. (Dow Jones) |

Monday, September 17, 2001 |
|
Summary
To expand revenue sources, Japan's number two telecoms firm, KDDI Corp, said on Wednesday it will launch a trial service that allows mobile phone users to shop in conventional stores using their handsets. By adding a special credit card function to mobile phones, the service will be the first to let users shop at actual stores, not just virtual ones, the company said. "I want our subscribers to shop with mobile phones for daily items such as tissue paper and canned juice," said Hide Haraguchi, head of KDDI's product and planning section. KDDI, which has 15.7 million subscribers, said 10,000 individual users will take part in the trial service between November and January, with the aim of launching a commercial service early next year. Mobile commerce is expected to expand to 2.45 trillion yen ($20.46 billion) in 2005, compared with 59 billion yen last year, according to icePay Japan, a startup Internet security firm and one of KDDI's three partners in the trial service. Cellphones set for e-wallet role on KDDI
Friday, September 14, 2001 |
|
Summary
Japan's first commercial service will use KDDI au mobile phones as e-wallets, and will start in the spring after a 5-company trial service using 10,000 monitors that begins in November. Phones with a small module equipped with an encoding function developed by Woori Technology Inc. of South Korea will be capable of settling payments for both real and virtual shops through users' accounts at eBank Corp., a Net-based bank in Tokyo, the firms said. KDDI Adds `Emotion' Computer To Mobile EZweb Services
Thursday, September 13, 2001 |
|
Summary
KDDI Corp. is launching a system that enables cellular phone users to play games and have virtual conversations with a computer it claims is sensitive to human emotions. The computer analyzes speech patterns to determine the user's mood and also speaks in a natural voice when responding to questions. The system uses mobile Internet access service EZ Web and software developed by AGI Inc., a company specializing in "emotion-recognition" software. KDDI plans to commercialize the system and distribute four games late next month in a tie-up with such game developers as Taito Corp. and PIA Corp. One of the initial offerings will be a "love/romance game" starring four high-school girls. When the conversation stalls or sputters, for example, a girl may hang up on the hapless user after whining: "Don't get so mad. Oh, you're so cold!" Initially, the service will be free, with users charged only for the telephone call and Net access fee. KDDI expects to attract 2 million users, mainly under 30 years old. The company also plans to commercialize in the future a service through which users can practice English-language conversation. (Dow Jones) |

KDDI's chief says it will be competitive with DoCoMo on 3G
Thursday, September 6, 2001 |
|
Summary
No. 2 mobile operator KDDI will offer third-generation (3G) cellphone handsets this autumn that can compete on price with those of market leader and rival NTT DoCoMo, according to KDDI President Takashi Onodera. KDDI will keep the prices of its future CDMA2000 1X phones essentially the same as its current CDMAOne phones, while offering twice the data transfer at a speed of 144Kbps. This fall, KDDI will also introduce WAP 2.0, enabling its customers to view both KDDI's "EZWeb" and DoCoMo's wildly popular "i-mode" service from KDDI's phones. KDDI will also add a combined global positioning system (GPS) and information service on its CDMA2000 1X cellphones. Neither of KDDI's competitors J-Phone and DoCoMo will offer GPS service, and both are bogged down in trials, while KDDI won't need a trial service because its CDMA2000 1X it will be offered on top of KDDI's CDMAOne technology. Full commercial launch is slated for Autumn. (Dow Jones) |

KDDI In Talks To Lease PHS Network To New Entrants
Tuesday, September 4, 2001 |
|
Summary
KDDI Corp. is negotiating with Japan Communications Inc., a Tokyo-based telecom firm, to lease the PHS (personal handyphone system) communications network operated by affiliate DDI Pocket, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported in its Sunday edition. Virgin Group of the U.K., which has entered many overseas telecom markets, is also approaching KDDI for possible use of the firm's cellular phone network, sources close to the matter said Saturday. If a deal is struck, KDDI will be the first domestic telecom carrier to open its infrastructure to an outside firm. KDDI's PHS network can handle about 10 million subscribers, though the company currently serves only 3 million. By leasing the surplus capacity, "we want to earn a stable fee income," said a KDDI senior official. KDDI is set to announce a leasing contract with Japan Communications in the middle of this month, the sources said. By leasing another firm's mobile communications network, new entrants will save on huge initial investment costs, which are said to typically reach Y300 billion to Y1 trillion in the first three to four years. Wednesday, August 29, 2001 |
|
Summary
KDDI Corp said on Tuesday it would absorb its wireless unit ``au'' Corp in October, making the mobile operations a core business as it prepares for third generation mobile services. KDDI to replace software in handsets
Friday, August 17, 2001 |

KDDI Corp, Japan's number two telecoms carrier, said on Friday it would replace handset software for 52,100 subscribers, underscoring the challenges in delivering faster and more sophisticated services. The step, which will rewrite the mobile phone's basic software free of charge, is effectively a recall because "au", (pronounced ay-you), KDDI's wireless unit, had told subscribers that the existing PacketOne 64 service would not be interrupted even if the network infrastructure were upgraded. Au said the replacement would be needed to ensure subscribers would be able to continue using the high-speed PacketOne 64 service when the company launches even faster data connection services in September. KDDI eats DoCoMo's lunch as EZweb users access i-mode sites
Thursday, August 2, 2001 |
|
Summary
Following improvements to its servers July 4, KDDI has enabled subscribers to its EZweb service to browse web pages designed for customers of NTT DoCoMo's i-mode service, viewing images as well as text. The new capability is due to the upgrade of a content conversion engine on KDDI's server. KDDI customers cannot access the more than 1700 "official" i-mode sites listed on the DoCoMo portal. Nevertheless, the change means that KDDI can tap into i-mode's success, earning data transport fees when its customers browse through more than 40,000 non-official i-mode sites via KDDI's own wireless network. KDDI recalls 560,000 battery packs for SONY handset
Thursday, July 26, 2001 |

Summary
Japan's second largest telecoms carrier, KDDI CORP, said on Wednesday it would recall battery packs for 560,000 mobile phones built by Sony Corp. for its mobile subsidiary "au". The largest single mobile phone-related recall in Japan this year comes after top wireless carrier NTT DoCoMo recalled two of its Sony- and Panasonic-branded phones for software glitches. The KDDI recall is for the Sony C406S, which ranked among the top 20 phones in Japan for the year 2000. The defect, related to a design flaw in the battery case of the Sony C406S, can cause it to short, overheat and change shape. Starting July 11, AU will offer to exchange the old battery packs for new ones. (MobileMediaJapan.com) |

KDDI Recall of Sony web-phone is less serious than it sounds
Thursday, July 26, 2001 |
|
Summary
More details have come to light regarding KDDI's announcement July 4 that it would recall 560,000 AU mobile phones manufactured by SONY for a battery replacement. Sony blamed the problem on a design flaw in the battery's circuitry made by a Sony affiliate rather than the battery cell itself. Analysts said this would reduce the recall's financial impact, since it does not involve replacing the phone outright or rewriting the software that makes it run. Shinko Securities electronics analyst Toshiya Tsuchikawa estimated the recall would cost Sony three billion yen ($24 million), a tiny fraction of its profit. Following the news, KDDI shares fell 2.15 percent lower at 545,000 yen. Sony shares were down 2.26 percent at 7,800 yen. Sony, a relative newcomer to the mobile handset market, may have more to lose as it bears its third recall this year. (Reuters) |
