No where else to grow: Softbank Rises on Chinese IPO
Tuesday, February 22, 2011 |
|
Summary
All the big mobile players in Japan are staring down the same double-barreled threat to their future: total market saturation AND an aging population. Sure, you can potentially put a wireless antenna on everything ELSE in the room, and yes there is probably a lot of potential in wireless hospice care applications, but the only real direction to grow if you want to expand like Facebook is OUT. That's why Softbank, Japan's third-largest mobile-phone operator, rose to the highest level in more than four years in Tokyo trading on Chinese affiliate Renren.com's plan for a $500 million U.S. initial public offering this year. Renren.com, China's largest social-networking service, is preparing an IPO to capitalize on strengthening demand for the nation's Internet stocks, three people with knowledge of the plan said. The banks handling the IPO are Morgan Stanley, Deutsche Bank AG and Credit Suisse Group AG. The offering could come by June. Softbank is the biggest shareholder in Beijing-based Renren, with a stake of about 40 percent. (Business Week) |
