Sony Develops Stamp-Sized Tuners for Portable Devices
Saturday, November 02, 2002 |
| |
Summary
November 1, 2002. Portable PCs and personal digital assistants (PDAs) have smaller screens than TV sets, so if those small devices maintain a high standard of picture quality, power consumption can be saved, said an official from Sony Corp., which developed postage stamp-sized TV tuner modules. The main application for the tuners will be in portable devices like PCs and PDAs, some of which lately are mounted with functions to enjoy TV images. The key to Sony’s success in developing tiny TV tuners lies in the fact that the high-frequency parts and signal detection parts of the tuner circuit have been incorporated into two LSIs. Sony, Apple make phone dream team
Tuesday, August 20, 2002 |
| |
Summary
Speculation that Apple is planning to launch a smartphone has been revived by John Markoff in the New York Times. This isn’t what we’re hearing at all - but it hasn’t stopped analysts taking the Rorschasch blot test and drawing some wild conclusions: ’"When you connect the dots, you end up at a phone," said Charles Wolf, a financial analyst who follows Apple for Needham & Company’", records the Times. No, the future points to close collaboration between SonyEricsson and Apple, with a slim outside chance of Apple rebadging one particular SonyEricsson device. But we’ll explain how we arrive at this conclusion. (The Register) |

Hitachi WINCE .NET PDA to support 802.11 Wireless LAN
Monday, March 04, 2002 |

Summary
In late April, Hitachi will begin shipping its proprietary personal digital assistants (PDAs) that run on Microsoft's new Windows CE .NET operating system, which supports IEEE802.11b, a wireless standard, Bluetooth, Voice over IP (VoIP) and other key functions. Retail price is anticipated to be about 50,000 yen. (134.06 yen = US$1) (Asia Biztech) Editor's Comment: With PDAs that support 802.11 hotspots hitting the market, look for the development of hybrid wireless connectivity solutions and new applications/services that target Japanese enterprise "heavy users" on the go. Expect also gasps of panic from among the mobile operators who will have to brace for new competition in providing wireless solutions to this still- developing but potentially huge market. |

Sharp packs PDA functions into cell phone
Wednesday, January 16, 2002 |
| |
Summary
There is talk of the cell phone and PDA converging, and recent announcements from major Japanese manufacturers certainly make it look that way. Later this year, Sharp will release a FOMA handset for DoCoMo's 3G network that will look like its popular Zaurus PDA. Meanwhile, Toshiba will release in the US a PDA that can also be used as a cell phone, with the device supporting CDMA2000 1x, a 2.5G protocol available in the US and Japan. It appears the PDA-cell phone convergance is centered on the more advanced cell phone market in Japan and the more mature PDA market in the US. Some, including this writer, are dubious on a PDA-cellie: yes, it allows you to use two vital things very easily; but it also allows you to lose two vital things very easily. (M. Thuresson) |

DoCoMo technology turns PDAs into mobile phones
Friday, January 11, 2002 |
| |
Summary
Already using a CompactFlash PHS data card for mobile Internet service for PDAs and laptops, DoCoMo adds voice service to complete the convergence. Each PHS data card is already assigned a phone number, which up until now had only been used for dialing in for access, so the addition of voice service is a natural next step. This also differentiates DoCoMo's PHS service, called "DoPa", from DDI Pocket's Air H" PHS service, which has been offering a highly popular flat rate plan but has yet to add voice functionality. (M. PDA Makers come closer to system integrators
Tuesday, December 11, 2001 |
| |
Summary
It's easier to differentiate wireless business and consumer applications on a PDA platform than a keitai platform. That is, PDAs are much more business-oriented devices than keitais. System integrators are enterprise market specialists, and PDA makers are making a push for PDAs to become a fixture of corporate IT budgets. Securing a attractive rate plan with a network carrier or virtual network operator like Japan Communications is an equally important part of mobilizing companies. (Mobile Media Japan) |

PDA Markets to Make Next Move, to Share Common Architecture
Wednesday, October 10, 2001 |
| |
Summary
The personal digital assistant market is now enjoying brisk momentum, and with surging PDA shipments, leading electronics makers are now expecting the PDA market to expand to the next stage. This trend in the PDA market is due to the powerful background of the expanding PDA application field brought about by the wireless infrastructure development. The trend of PDA development is now seeing a change in policies to favor the utilization of the industry's common platforms, such as using the industry's standard OS and micro-controller, whereas up to now PDA makers had developed PDA products on their own. Business Mobile Users' Top Complaint is Short Battery Life
Friday, October 05, 2001 |
| |
Summary
A survey NTT-X Inc. and Mitsubishi Research Institute on mobile communications devices showed that more than half of businesspeople using mobile communications devices are dissatisfied with the short life of the battery after a single charge. In the survey, 78.1% of respondents said they are using mobile communication devices for business. The survey excludes mobile phones that only have voice communications. The survey also asked about inconveniences, and 51.7% complained about the battery not lasting long after a single charge, followed by comments about the heavy weight and bulky size (43.5%), and the slow data transmission speed (35.1%). The most popular devices were a cellular phone that has functions to enjoy Internet surfing and e-mail delivery and a notebook PC, each receiving nearly half of the 45.3% response. Personal digital assistants followed at 11.5 percent. 29% of all mobile communication device users said they are using the wireless data transmission function. About half, or 40.1% of those surveyed said cellular phone and PHS makers should find better ways to input characters and numbers, while 35% said PDA makers should improve the performance of the microchip for processing data. Sharp to Make 3G PDAs for NTT DoCoMo
Friday, August 24, 2001 |
| |
Summary
Japan's top maker of personal digital assistants (PDAs), Sharp Corp, said it will supply handheld computers with third-generation (3G) wireless capabilities to NTT DoCoMo. Sharp said the new advanced 3G multimedia handheld version of its popular Zaurus line computer will be sold under DoCoMo's brand on an original equipment manufacturing basis. The device is to be compatible with DoCoMo's 3G FOMA service, now in trial testing and due for commercial launch in October. At present, PDAs sold in Japan do not have built-in wireless capabilities, and like the current Zaurus can only access mobile networks through a separate mobile communications card or via a cable attached to a mobile phone. Sharp plans to start selling an overseas version of the current Zaurus in the US in October and in Europe early next year, and aims to sell one million PDAs worldwide in the first year. (Reuters) |
